The Adventure of the Venetian Pearls (part 32)

Back at the Quay in Hugh Town, they said goodbye to Mike and thanked him for everything.

"Any time!" he shouted in good humour as he left.

"My mother was not always like that, you know," Daniel explained when they were standing in front of the chemist's. "She was driving when the accident happened. It was not her fault. Some other car was overtaking a lorry in a bend. She swerved, came off the road and the car overturned. We were lucky... considering... "

His hands were buried in his pockets, he shuffled his feet and didn't dare look at them.

"If she hadn't swerved, we'd probably all have been killed...

Nicky laid her hand on his arm. "Hey, you don't have to apologise," she said softly.

"Yeah, we had a great time," Chris confirmed.

Daniel looked at them, relieved and grateful.

Chris clapped his hands together and rubbed them. "So, see you tomorrow, then. Here? Ten o'clock?"

"Sure," Daniel nodded and left.

He had hardly turned the corner, when Chris and Nicky heard "Waltzing Matilda" again.
