The Adventure of the Venetian Pearls (part 30)

Mike shook his head. "Sorry. Annet is one of the islands closed for visitors during the summer months."

"I guess it's to make sure the birds can nest in peace?" Daniel asked.

"Yes. The unspoilt nature is our biggest asset, after all. Some tourists come especially to observe birds that aren't to be found on the mainland."

"It's strange when I hear you refer to England as 'the mainland'," Chris grinned. "For me it's just another island."

Although they were disappointed not to be able to go closer, they could accept the reason. Watching the strange birds was still good fun. They even forgot about the Luardi Pearls for a while.

Suddenly, Daniel's mobile phone rang.

"Oh, no. Not again!" he groaned.

"What is it?" Mike asked.

"Probably my mother, who wants to know where I am."

"You'd better answer it, then."

Making a face, Daniel produced his phone. "Yeah?.... Hi, Mum.... On a boating tour with Mike... You know, the driver from our hotel... What?..." Slightly blushing he interrupted the call and told Mike, "She wants to talk to you."

Surprised, Mike took the phone.
