The Adventure of the Venetian Pearls (part 22)

"If only we knew what he said!" exclaimed Nicky, annoyed. "Can it be it was something about a cold guy?"
Chris grinned. "Caldo means hot, not cold."

Daniel and Nicky gaped at him.

"You can speak Italian?"

"We have it at school. It's one of the languages spoken in Switzerland, after all."

"So go on!" Nicky pressed him. "What did he swear about?"

Chris shrugged. "I'm not very good at Italian, I'm afraid. Somehow it doesn't seem to make sense either. He said he knew it wouldn't work. And then... I'm not sure... He talked about some guy called Luardi, who was hot. But the grammar seemed wrong."

Daniel stood there as if in trance.

"What's happening to you?" Nicky asked.

"Wait here! I'll be right back!" he shouted and away he sped towards his room.

He brought back a newspaper clipping he showed the others proudly.

"Hey!" Chris exclaimed. "I know that headline. It's from the paper the Major was reading in the helicopter."
